Three Honest Men

Book Two of The Head Dragon Series

Two brothers, an FBI investigation, and loyalties tested across borders.

Synopsis

An attorney under FBI surveillance is drawn into international espionage when his brother’s life depends on a woman the authorities want him to distrust.

Carl Mischler does not know that he fits an FBI profile for a Latin American drug cartel operative—or that Ed Moskalek, the criminal defense attorney cultivating his confidence, is an undercover agent investigating his law practice.

Ed uses Pui Chu Dong’s arrest to pressure her into a sting against Carl. Believing Carl to be honest, Pui Chu gives him her contact numbers. Ed photographs the meeting and later presents it as evidence that Carl’s connections could further criminal activity.

Meanwhile, Carl’s brother John has agreed to work for Mossad as an assassin. When betrayal and a CIA operation leave John in danger in Tajikistan, Carl turns to Pui Chu for help. His decision draws the brothers into a conflict involving intelligence agencies, Chinese organized crime, and loyalties that could cost them their lives.

  • Multi-layered antagonists: Pui Chu and other characters operate in moral gray areas rather than as simple villains, creating more sophisticated conflicts.

Potential Readers - Three Honest Men will appeal to readers who enjoy complex plots with interconnected characters and geopolitical intrigue.

Archetype - Three Honest Men is most similar to the Rags to Riches story archetype.

Genre & Story Type - Three Honest Men is primarily an International Thriller with strong elements of Espionage Fiction. The story also contains elements of the following:

  • Crime Fiction
  • Legal Thriller
  • Military Thriller
  • Political Thriller
  • Action-Adventure
  • Family Drama
  • Organized Crime
  • Government Conspiracy
  • Contemporary Fiction

Analysis of Major Elements - Readers of modern fiction expect stories to hit certain notes, particularly in genre fiction, that build on perennial story elements that harken back to ancient times. These fundamental components create the framework that keeps readers engaged and emotionally invested in the narrative.

  • Hook: The opening scene with Carl doing laundry and deciding to go country-western dancing provides an immediate hook that establishes his mundane life before the complications begin. This contrast between ordinary life and extraordinary circumstances is effective in drawing readers into the story.
  • The opening: The first chapter successfully grabs reader attention by establishing Carl's routine world and then introducing the mysterious element of Ed's presence at the bar. The opening creates questions about Ed's true motives while establishing Carl as a relatable protagonist. The momentum continues as Carl begins his legal practice and encounters unusual clients, maintaining reader interest in discovering what lies beneath the surface.
  • Relatable protagonist: Carl is successfully portrayed as a likable and relatable character early in the story through his interactions with his cat Jujube, his concern for clients, and his genuine friendship with Suraya. His small struggles with his law practice and his loyalty to his brother make him sympathetic to readers.
  • Inciting incident: The inciting incident is Carl's decision to help his wounded brother John by contacting Pui Chu, which sets in motion the events that will transform both their lives. This occurs at the appropriate point in the story, roughly one-third through, giving time to establish the characters and their normal world before disrupting it.
  • Call to adventure: Carl demonstrates reluctance to get involved in dangerous situations throughout the story, from his hesitation about Pui Chu's initial requests to his resistance to Ed's business proposals. The call that compels him to action is his brother's desperate need for help, which overcomes his natural caution.
  • First plot point: The first major plot point occurs when Carl realizes that Ed is FBI and that his practice has been under surveillance, fundamentally changing his understanding of his situation and forcing him to question everyone around him.
  • Midpoint shift: The story's midpoint shift occurs when John is shot and Carl must contact Pui Chu for help, occurring at approximately 60% of the story. This event transforms the narrative from a domestic thriller about FBI surveillance into an international conspiracy involving organized crime and espionage.
  • Second plot point: The second plot point is the attack on Dragon's compound, which forces Carl and John to fully commit to their new lives in China and eliminates any possibility of returning to their previous existence.
  • Climax: The story's climax revolves around the compound battle where Carl, John, and Pui Chu fight for their lives against government forces. This climax brings together all the story's threads and will be satisfying to readers as it demonstrates the characters' growth and resourcefulness.
  • Resolution: The story resolves with the brothers established in new lives in China, Carl's practice being managed by others, and Pui Chu ascending to power in the criminal organization. Most major plot threads are resolved satisfactorily, though some loose ends remain regarding secondary characters.

Setting & World-Building - The story handles multiple settings effectively, ranging from Los Angeles immigration law offices to Afghan compounds to Chinese safe houses. The contemporary urban environments feel authentic and well-researched, particularly the legal office scenes and the ethnic neighborhoods where Carl meets clients. The author demonstrates strong knowledge of these professional and cultural environments. The international settings in Afghanistan and China are convincingly detailed, showing clear research into local customs, geography, and political situations. The contrast between Carl's comfortable American environment and the dangerous foreign locations effectively heightens tension and shows character displacement. The story succeeds in using setting to enhance mood and character development. Carl's small law office reflects his modest ambitions and careful approach to business, while Pui Chu's various environments reveal her power and sophistication. The progression from mundane American settings to exotic and dangerous international locations mirrors the characters' journey from ordinary life to extraordinary circumstances. However, some descriptions could be delayed until more relevant to immediate action rather than front-loading environmental details. The Afghan marketplace description works well because it serves character development, but some Chinese location descriptions could be better integrated into dramatic scenes rather than presented as static background.

Theme Analysis - The primary theme of the story centers on loyalty versus survival, exploring how family bonds and personal relationships are tested when characters face life-threatening situations and moral compromises. This theme is represented through Carl's willingness to risk everything to help his brother, John's struggle between his dangerous profession and desire for normal relationships, and the various characters' choices between personal safety and loyalty to others.

Secondary themes include:

  • The price of secrets and deception in both personal and professional relationships.
  • The conflict between individual freedom and government authority in the modern surveillance state.
  • The moral complexity of violence when used to protect loved ones versus institutional purposes.

Word count: The supplied assessment reports approximately 94,821 words for Three Honest Men.
